Y10 Plants Glossary
Y10 Plants and Photosynthesis glossary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | Process of converting light energy into chemical energy. |
| Chloroplast | Site of photosynthesis |
| Chlorophyll | Green pigment in chloroplast that absorbs light for photosynthesis. |
| Transpiration | Process by which water passes through a plant by being absorbed from the roots, transported through the xylem and evaporated through the stomata due to pressure. |
| Reactant in photosynthesis | carbon dioxide and water |
| Products of photosynthesis | oxygen and glucose |
| Test for starch | Iodine turns black if present and stays brown if absent. |
| Stomata | Pores on the bottom of leaves that allows for the evaporation of gasses through diffusion. |
| Leaves | Adaptation of plants to maximise the absorption of sunlight by increasing the surface area exposed to sunlight. |
| Aerobic respiration | Chemical energy stored in glucose is released during this process. |
| Starch | Glucose is converted into this carbohydrate molecule for storage. |
| Factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis | Light intensity, concentration of carbon dioxide and temperature. |
| Environmental factors that affect the rate of transpiration | Temperature, humidity and wind |
