| Biology | The scientific study of life. |
| Order | highly ordered structure that typifies life. Living cells are the basis. |
| Reproduction | Organisms reproduce their own kind. |
| Growth and development | Inherited information in the form of DNA. |
| Response to the environment | All organisms respond to environmental stimuli. |
| Regulation | The types of mechanisms that regulate an organism's internal environment. |
| Evolutionary adaptation | adaptations evolve over many generations, depending on environment, traits best suited to their environments succeed while traits not best suited die off. |
| Hypothesis | A tentative explanation for some observation. |
| Scientific theory | An explanation for a generalized concept that is broad in scope and is supported by a vast body of evidence. |
| Natural selection | Gets rid of things that don't work, they die off or don't reproduce. |
| Scientific method | Process by which science is conducted, i.e. make observation, formulate hypothesis, make predictions, experimentation, draw conclusions. |
| Scientific law | Describes some well observed phenomenon, but doesn't explain why. |
| Making observations | From direct observations in nature, reading scientific papers. |
| Hypothesis | Must be testable and falsifiable, can be disproved, not proved. |
| Cell | The smallest unit of life. |
| Independent variable | Factor in an experiment that is altered, factor that will affect subjects, scientist can manipulate. |
| Dependent variable | Factor that is measured, scientist doesn't manipulate but measures. |
| Experimental group | Group that is being tested, experiences that altered independent variable. |
| Control group | Group that is used to see if an effect occurred in experimental group; all variables the same except independent variable. |
