Modern classification This system shows evolutionary relationships; Binomial Nomenclature (two names); Genus – like last name Species – like first name, Example: Homo sapiens (Human – “wise”); Any language follows this system
Taxonomic Rankings Domain=largest group, least specific; Kingdom; Phylum; Class; Order; Family; Genus; Species=smallest group, most specific
Six Kingdoms organized by structure and physical similarities
Eubacteria prokaryotic, live in mild habitats
Archaebacteria prokaryotic, live in harsh habitats
Protists eukaryotic, lacks organ systems
Fungi eukaryotic, decomposer
Plants Eukaryotic, do photosynthesis
Animals Eukaryotic, multi-cellular heterotrophs
