Parts of a Cell
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | Made of cellulose; Shapes and supports the cell; Only in PLANT cell |
| Cell Membrane | Selectively permeable, phospholipid bilayer, transport proteins; Controls what comes in and out of the cell; In BOTH cells |
| Cytoplasm | Cytoskeleton/microtubules; Substance that contains all the organelles; In BOTH cells |
| Vacuole | Sac shaped; Sac used to store water and dissolved mineral; In BOTH cells |
| Mitochondria | Hot dog bun, bean shaped; power house and gives us the energy, cellular respiration occurs; In BOTH cells |
| Chloroplast | Green bean shaped, contains thylakoids; Makes food for plants, uses photosynthesis; Only in PLANT cells |
| Nucleus | The direct center in the cell; Contains DNA and chromosomes; In BOTH cells |
| Nucleolus | Round ball within the nucleus; produces ribosomes; In BOTH cells |
| Ribosomes | Dot like structures, freely floats in the nucleolus; Where proteins are made; In BOTH cells |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | Rough and smooth; Carbohydrates and lipids are processed; In BOTH cells |
| Golgi Complex | Layer of ribbon looks; Modifies and packages proteins into vesicles (sac) for transport; In BOTH cells |
| Lysosome | Like a ball; Digest unwanted materials; In BOTH cells |
| Peroxisomes | Small bubbles; Function of rid the body of toxic substance like hydrogen; In ANIMAL cells |
| Cilia | Shorter tails; Used in movement of cells; In ANIMAL cells |
| Flagella | Longer tails; Used in movement of cells; In ANIMAL cells |
