Skeletal and Muscular System Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Cartilage | A tissue that is more flexible than bone. |
| Compact Bone | Hard, dense bone tissue that is beneath the outer membrane of a bone |
| Spongy Bone | Layer of bone tissue having many small spaces and found just inside the layer of compact bone |
| Marrow | The soft connective tissue that fills the internal spaces in bone |
| Osteoporosis | A condition in which the body’s bones become weak and break easily |
| Fracture | A break in a bone |
| Dislocation | An injury in which a bone comes out of its joint |
| Sprain | An injury in which the ligaments holding bones together are stretched too far and tear |
| X-ray | A form of energy that travels in waves, used to determine if bones have been broken |
| Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) | A method for taking clear images of both the bones and soft tissues of the body |
| Involuntary Muscle | A muscle that is not under conscious control |
| Voluntary Muscle | A muscle that is under conscious control |
| Skeletal Muscle | A muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones |
| Tendon | Strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone |
| Striated Muscle | A muscle that appears banded; also called skeletal muscle |
| Smooth Muscle | Involuntary muscle found inside many internal organs of the body |
| Cardiac Muscle | Muscle tissue found only in the heart |
| Skeleton | The inner framework made of all the bones of the body |
| Vertebrae | The bones that make up the backbone of an animal |
| Joint | A place in the body where two bones come together |
| Ligament | Strong connective tissue that holds bones together in movable joints |
