Words on Chapter 5 of Bio!
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diffusion | Process where molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration |
| Equilibrium | Equal concentration throughout |
| Permeable | A substance that is able to diffuse across a membrane |
| Selectively Permeable | Cell Membranes; can regulate what enters and exits |
| Factors that Affect Permeablity | Size, Cemical Composition, Pressure, pH |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane such as the cell membrane |
| Hypertonic | When water rushes in, explodes |
| Hypotonic | When water rushes out, shrivels up |
| Isotonic | Equal H2O and Solute |
| Turgor Pressure | The pressure created by the movement of H2O into plant cells |
| Active Transport | The movement of a substance across a membrane against its concentration gradient |
| Homeostasis | A state of equilibrium to a body |
| Active Transport | Requires energy usage, low to high concentration |
| Sodium Potassium Pump | Releasing sodium from inside the cell and bringing them outside the cell, opposite with potassium |
| Exocytosis | A process by which cells export substances in vesicles |
| Vesicles | A membrane bound organelle |
| Endocytosis | Cells import substances in vesicles |
| Phagocytosis | Cell Eating |
| Pimocytosis | Cell Drinking |
