Digestion System

Intracellular Digestion: Digestion that occurs within the cell.
Extracellular Digestion: Digestion that occurs outside of the cell (in body cavities like our small intestine).
Mechanical Digestion: Changing the size or shape of foods.
Chemical Digestion: Changing the chemical composition of food. Ex: converting a protein into amino acids.
Mouth: Teeth are responsible for mech.digestion and the tongue helps to mix the food with saliva.
Salivary Glands: Produce saliva which is water and enzymes. The water aids in mech. digestion of all foods.

*Salivary Amylase: The enzyme found in saliva. It digests complex carbs into glucose. This is chemical digestion.
