AP Biology - Unit 11 Plants

Desiccation Drying out
Cuticle of plants Waxy covering on aerial parts that reduces desiccation.
Vascular system Consists of xylem and phloem. They provide channels for the transport of water and nutrients
Xylem Vascular tissue specialized for water transport.
Phloem Vascular tissue specialized for sugar transport.
Ovary In plants, the protective structure that holds the ovules and surrounds the angiosperm seed; after fertilization, develops into a fruit.
Deciduous Shedding the leaves annually (like trees to minimize water loss in dormant season).
In primitive plant divisions Flagellated sperm need water to swim to the eggs.
In advanced plant divisions Sperm are adapted for delivery by wind and pollen.
In Gymnosperms and Angiosperms, the sperm is packaged as pollen.
Gametophtes Gamete-producing stage in the life cycle of a plant
Gamete A haploid sex cell.
