Chapter 7 Vocabulary Exploring Creation with Botany

TermDefinition
Root Hairs Do most of the absorbing of water and nutrients
Transplant Shock When too many root hairs are destroyed in the process of moving a plant to a new location and the plant dies.
Roots The plants' little water pipes that carry nutrients and water from the soil and hold the plant in place like an anchor.
Erosion Rain and wind washing away soil
Geotropism A sense that the plant has to know which way to grow. The roots are always turning toward the earth in the direction of gravity.
Taproot One thick root growing down from the plant's stem. Carrots and turnips are taproots that we eat. Dicots
Fibrous Root Made up of a series of roots growing in many directions. Usually wider than it is deep. Monocots
Bulbs A special type of seed that is an underground storage house made of leaves and a short stem. Can be pulled up and stored to plant later.
Geophytes "earth-plant". The entire plant is under the earth. bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes.
Rhizomes Grow horizontally and the roots grow from the corms. Potatoes, ginger, crocus.
Clones Something grown from the same DNA as it's parent.
