This unit looks at why we get sick and how our bodies stop it.

Phagocyte A common form of white blood cells which eat the enemy
B-Cells A white blood cell that creates antibodies to fight against pathogens
Antibodies A specially designed structure for latching onto pathogens to help stop them
AIDS The condition of having an immune system destroyed by HIV
Spiritual Reasons I am sick because God is mad at me and I can't please Him
HIV The virus that targets and destroys the immune system
White Blood Cells (Immune System) The soldiers in our bodies (A third line of defense)
Macrophages A large white blood cell that eats many enemies
Rheumatoid Arthritis A condition when your white blood cells attack your own joints...It attacks your own body
Vaccines Using a pathogen to train the body to fight pathogens
Four Humours We are sick because our fluids get out of balance and have to be rebalanced
Spontaneous Generation The illness is inside us and comes out without any warning
Stomach Acid A strong fluid that is part of the second line of defense which protects us when we eat pathogens
Pathogens The enemies in our bodies (Germs) (Bacteria or viruses)
T-Cells These white blood cells help to identify the enemies in our bodies
Louis Pasteur The Father of Germ Theory ("Germs make us sick")....Also developed the pasteurization process for food
Pasteurization We heat up our food to kill any pathogens
Hair Threadlike structures that help to block pathogens in our noses and respiratory system
Mucus A sticky second line of defense that protects our respiratory system
Tears A fluid that protects our eyes as a second line of defense against pathogens
Germ Theory The theory that germs make us sick by invading our bodies and releasing toxins
