| Term | Definition |

| Trait | A characteristics that is passed down from parent to offspring |
| Gene | The location in an individual's DNA that codes for a trait |
| Alleles | Different forms of a gene |
| Dominant Allele | You always see this allele if an individual has it |
| Recessive Allele | Hidden by dominant alleles |
| Homozygous | Prefix means same. This word means the individual has two of the same alleles |
| Purebred | An individual that has two of the same alleles for a gene |
| Heterozygous | Prefix means different. This word means the individual has two different alleles |
| Hybrid | An individual that has two different alleles for a gene |
| Genotype | The two letter code that tells you what allele pair and individual has |
| Phenotype | What an individual looks like for a certain trait (physical appearance) |
