| ligament | holds together bones in movable joints |
| compact bone | hard, dense bone -- contains minerals that give bones strength |
| spongy bone | ends of long bones, under compact bone, lightweight |
| marrow | connective tissue in bones RED = fills spaces in spongy bone - produces blood cells YELLOW = fills spaces in middle of bones - stores fat |
| cartilage | strong connective tissue; more flexible than bone |
| osteoporosis | condition in which bones lose minerals & become weak; break easily |
