The Nervous System

QuestionAnswer
These are the effectors of the nervous system that generally provide the responce. Muscles and glands
True or false:The nervous system sends AP to the CNS. True
True or false: Action Potential on motor neurons give the nervous system responce. True
True or False: The nervous system monitors changes that occur inside and outside the body. True
Brain, spinal cord and organs are structures of? The central nervous system (CNS)
Intergration (command center), interpreting sensory information and issuing outgoing instructions are all functions of? The CNS
The periperal nervous system (PNS) is made of? Nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord.
These carry impulses to and from the spinal cord. Spinal nerves
These carry impulses to and from the brain. Cranial nerves
What do the sensory (afferent) neurons of the PNS do? Carry AP/information TO the CNS
What do the motor (efferent) neurons of the PNS do? Carry AP/impulses AWAY from the CNS
What are the two subdivisions of the motor (efferent) division of the PNS? Somatic nervous system and the Autonomic nervous system
Which glial cells are sbundant, star-shaped and protect the cell by bracing the neurons? Astrocytes
These glial cells form a barrier between capillaries and neurons; they control the chemical enviroment of the brain. Astrocytes
These glial cells are spiderlike phagocytes that dispose of debris and destroy bacteria. Microglia
These glial cells line the cavities of the brain and spinal cord. Ependymal cells
These cells cillia assist with the production of and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid. Ependymal cells
These cells form the myelin sheath tjat wraps around the nerve fibers in the CNS; also produce the myelin sheath. Oligodendrocytes
These cells protect neron cell bodies. Satellite cells
These cells form the myelin sheath in the PNS. Schwann cells
True or false: 1/2 of the brain mass is glial cells. True
What is the whitish, fatty material that covers the PNS axons? The myelin sheath
These are clusters of cell bodies within the white matter of the CNS. Nucleus
These are collections of cell bodies that are outside of the CNS but inside the PNS. Ganglia
This is the location of cell bodies and unmyelninated fibers. Gray matter
A fiber is also known as? Long axon
Bundles of nerve fibers(axons)in the CNS, that are wrapped in connective tissue. Tracts
This collects the myelinated fibers (tracts) White matter
These are bundles of nerve fibers (axons) in the PNS, that are wrapped in connective tissue. Nerves

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
