| DNA replication | process by which DNA is copied in a cell before a cell divides by mitosis, meiosis, or binary fission |
| helicase | enzymes that seperate the DNA strands |
| replication fork | the y-shaped region that results when the two strands of DNA seperate |
| DNA polymerase | enzymes that add complementary nucleotides, found floating freely inside the nucleus, to each of the orginal strands |
| semi-conserative replication | when each of the new DNA molecules has kept one of the two orginal DNA strands |
| mutation | a change in the nucleotide sequence of a DNA molecule |
