ER - The Cell Cycle
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Cycle | sequence of growth and division cell |
| Mitosis | period of nuclear cell division in which two daughter cells are formed each containing a complete set of chromosomes |
| Interphase | the period of the cell cycle during which the nucleus is not undergoing division, typically occurring between mitotic or meiotic divisions. |
| Cytokinesis | the division of the cell cytoplasm that usually follows mitotic or meiotic division of the nucleus. |
| Prophase | the stage in mitosis or meiosis in which the duplicated chromosomes line up along the equatorial plate of the spindle. |
| Anaphase | the final stage of meiosis or mitosis, in which the separated chromosomes reach the opposite poles of the dividing cell and the nuclei of the daughter cells form around the two sets of chromosomes. |
| Daughter Cell | Either of the two identical cells that form when a cell divides. |
| Cancer | uncontrolled cell division |
| Reproduction | the natural process among organisms by which new individuals are generated and the species perpetuated. |
| Chromatin | the readily stainable substance of a cell nucleus, consisting of DNA, RNA, and various proteins, that forms chromosomes during cell division. |
| Chromatids | one of two identical chromosomal strands into which a chromosome splits longitudinally preparatory to cell division. |
| Centromere | a specialized structure on the chromosome, appearing during cell division as the constricted central region where the two chromatids are held together and form an X shape. |
| Chromosome | any of several threadlike bodies, consisting of chromatin, that carry the genes in a linear order: the human species has 23 pairs, designated 1 to 22 in order of decreasing size and X and Y for the female and male sex chromosomes respectively. |
| Spindle | cell structure composed of microtubules that aid in the process of cell division by moving the chromatids through the process |
| Aster | a structure formed in a cell during mitosis, composed of astral rays radiating about the centrosome. |
| Cleavage furrow | indentations of the cell membrane that forms during cytokinesis in an animal cell, the cleavage furrow eventually pinches together forming the two new cells |
| Cell plate | a plate that develops at the midpoint between the two groups of chromosomes in a dividing cell and that is involved in forming the wall between the two new daughter cells. |
| Inhibition | slows or stops something from happening |
