Chapter 9 Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Calorie The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.
Cellular Respiration The proceess that releases engery from food in the presence of oxygen.
Aerobic Pathways of cellular respiration that require oxygen.
Anerobic Pathways of cellular respiration that do not require oxygen.
Glycolysis The first set of reactions in cellular respiration. The word glycolysis translates to "sugar-breaking". The process transforms glucose into pyruvic acid.
NAD+ An electron carrier. NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.
Krebs Cycle The second stage of cellular respiration. This process breaks down pyruvic acid into CO2 in a series of energy-extracting reactions.
Matrix The innermost compartment of the mitochondrion and the site of the Krebs cycle reaction.
Fermentation The ATP producing process that occurs in the absence of oxygen.
