What are mutations? changes in genetic material that can either be harmful or have no effect
What are the 2 main types of mutations and the difference? point mutations affect one or a few nucleotides, framshift mutations shift the entire reading frame of a gene
What is a type of point mutation ? Substitution
What are the types of framshift mutations? insertion, deletion
What are chromosomal mutations? changes in the # or structure of chromosomes
what are the types of chromosomal mutations? deletions, duplications, inversions, translocations
Compare gene mutations and chromosomal mutations gene mutations are on a smaller scale because genes are segments of DNA while chromosomes are entire molecules of DNA
What does ploid mean? number of copies of chromosome
what is polyploidy? condition in which an organism has extra sets of chromosomes
