Introduction to Genetics and Heredity

TermDefinition
Allele specific version of a gene (ex: blue or brown eyes)
Gene a sequence of DNA (on a chromosome) that carries the codes for proteins that cause traits- like eye color or tooth size.
Locus a specific location on a DNA molecule
Genotype a combination of letters like Bb that represent alleles for a certain trait. One letter comes from mom
Heterozygous the state of having two different alleles (Bb
Homozygous the state of having two of the same alleles (BB
Homozygous the state of having two of the same DOMINANT alleles (BB
Homozygous the state of having two of the same RECESSIVE alleles (bb
Dominance the idea that one of the traits in an allele will dominate the other (shown as a CAPITOL letter)
Recessive the idea that one of the traits in an allele will BE dominated the other (shown as a lower-case letters)
