Chapter 9 Biology Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| heredity | the transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring |
| genetics | the feild of biology devoted to understanding how characteristics are tansmitted from parents to offspring |
| trait | genetically determined variant of a characteristic |
| pollination | when the pollin grains from the male part of a flower are transmitted to the female part of the flower |
| self-pollination | when a flower pollinates itself or another flower from the same plant |
| cross-pollination | pollination between two seperate plants |
| true-breeding | plants that always produce a certain trait in their offspring when they self pollinate |
| P generation | the true-breeding parents |
| F1 Generation | the offspring of the P generation |
| F2 generation | the offspring of the F1 generation |
| dominant | a trait that dominates or mask another factor of a trait in that pair |
| recessive | a trait that has no formation in a plant if paired with a dominant trait |
| law of segregation | a pair of factors are seperated during the formation of gamates |
| molecular genetics | the study of structure and function of chromosomes and genes |
| allele | the two alternative forms of a gene |
| law of independant assortment | factors seperate independantly of one another during formation of gamates |
| genotype | an organisms genetic makeup |
| phenotype | an organisms appearance |
| homozygous | when both alleles of a pair are alike |
| heterozygous | when the two alleles in the pair are different |
| probability | the likelihood that a specific event will occur |
| monohybrid cross | A cross in which only one characteristic is tracked |
| Punnett Square | a diagram used for predicting the probable distribution of inherited traits in the offspring |
| genotypic ratio | the ratio of an offsprings genotypes |
| phenotypic ratio | the ratio of an offsprings phenotypes |
| testcross | when an individual whose genotype is unknown is crossed with a homozygous recessive individual |
| complete dominance | when one allele is completely dominant over another |
| incomplete dominance | when the phenotype is somewhere between the two aleles |
| codominance | when both alleles for a gene are expressed in a heterozygous offspring! YYYAAAAAYYYY SSCIIIEEENNNNCCEEE!!! |
| dihybrid cross | A cross in which two characteristics are tracked. More difficult than predicting the results of a monohybrid cross |
