Griffith studied bacteria and created a vaccine which he tested on rats. His experiment: heat treated virulent + Harmless non-virulent= dead rat. his conclusion: transformation (bacteria have the ability to transfer genetic info from one bacteria to another)
Avery, Macleod, McCarty continued Griffth's experiment. conclusion: transforming factor was DNA and NOT proteins. their evidence was not widely accepted
Hershey, Chase studied bacteriophages. experiment: bacteriophage with blinking DNA+ bacteria+ mix it= bacteria with blinking DNA. conclusion: DNA is the unit of heredity!
Chargaff base pairs are complementary: A=T and G=C
Rosalind Franklin took first "picture" of DNA using complex X-Ray Crystallography. this was instrumental to figuring out the structure of DNA
Watson, Crick figured out the double helix shape of the DNA molecule
