Genetics Vocab for 6th gr.

QuestionAnswer
Heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Gene Segments of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), that carry instructions for the traits of an organism from parent to offspring.
Chromosome A structure located in the nucleus of a cell, made of DNA, that contains genetic information needed to carry out cell functions and make new cells.
Dominant The ability of one allele to mask (overpower) the other in a set of genes.
Allele Each gene in a pair of genes, that determine a specific trait.
Trait A distinguishing quality or characteristic, determined by genes.
Recessive The allele that is masked (overpowered) by the dominant allele.
Geneotype A set of alleles that an organisms has for a trait.
Phenotype The appearance of that the trait takes on (physical characteristic).
Punnett Square A table used to to predict what traits an offspring will have based on what traits the parents have.
Hetrozygous Having two different alleles for a single trait.
Homozygous Having two of the same alleles for a single trait.
Pure bred Bred from parents of the same breed or variety, not having recessive traits.
Hybrid Two different traits or characteristics in an organism.
