Key terms in genetics

QuestionAnswer
Heterozygous the two alleles are different
Homozygous The two alleles are the same
Allele A form of a gene
Phenotype The observable characteristics of an organism
Genotype The alleles present within cells of an individual for a particular trait or characteristic
Dominant An allele that is always expressed when present
Recessive An allele that is only expressed when in the presence of another identical allele
Co-dominant Two different alleles of the same gene that are both expressed
Linkage Two different genes thatare located on the same chromosome, and normally inherited together
