Terms for chapter seven section one: Modern Biology

cellular respiration the complex process in which cells make adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by breaking down organic compounds.
pyruvic acid
NADH
anaerobic describes a process that does not require oxygen.
aerobic respiration the process in which pyruvic acid is broken down and NADPH is used to make a large amount of ATP; the part of respiration that is carried out in the presence of oxygen.

alcoholic fermentation the anaerobic process by which yeasts and other microorganisms break down sugars to form carbon dioxide and ethanol.
