LE: Parts of a Cell
Vocabulary words for Parts of a Cell and Diffusion
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cells | All living things are made of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things. New cells are produced from existing cells. |
| Organelles | The mini-organs inside of a cell that each has a specific job |
| Nucleus | The control center or boss of the cell. It contains all DNA and controls the cell’s activities |
| Cell Membrane | surrounds the cell and separates what’s inside the cell from what’s outside of it. It also controls what diffuses into and out of the cell. |
| Cell Wall | This is only found in plants. It acts as the skeleton of the cell and protects it from any injury. |
| Ribosomes | little “protein factories” inside of cells, they synthesize or make protein. |
| Vacuole | storage center for the cell, it holds water and food, as well as wastes that need to go out of the cell. Vacuoles are bigger in plants because they need to hold more water. |
| Mitochondria | The cell's “powerhouse” where cells get their energy. The mitochondria turn glucose and oxygen into ATP, which is a form of energy the cell can use. |
| Chloroplasts | these are only found in plants. This is where photosynthesis happens. |
| Lysosomes | Acts like a garbage disposal. The lysosome breaks down large molecules into smaller molecules. |
| Cytoplasm | a jelly-like fluid that holds all of the organelles of a cell. |
| Diffusion | In diffusion, molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. |
| Concentration | Is the amount of molecules in an area. |
| Active Transport | Is where a cell uses an energy called ATP to move molecules into or out of the cell. In active transport molecules move from low to high concentration. |
