Unit 12 - DNA & Heredity

offspring The result of reproduction, the second generation after the parents - children
heredity the passing of characteristics from parents to offspring, from generation to generation.
Rosalind Franklin Scientist in the 1950's who took X-ray photographs showing the shape and structure of DNA. Her contribution to what we know about DNA was not recognized until years after her death.
James Watson & Francis Crick Scientists recognized for discovering the exact shape and structure of a DNA molecule. They received a Nobel Prize in 1962.
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid. A double stranded molecule found in all cells and contains the chemical code for life.
gene a section of DNA that contains instructions for making a protein.
chromosome a package of coiled up DNA that is X-shaped in eukaryotes and O-shaped in prokaryotes. They are only visible under a microscope during mitosis. Humans have 46 (23 from Mom and 23 from Dad)
genetics The scientific study of genes and heredity
base pair parts of a DNA molecule that match up to link the two strands of DNA together. They make up the stairs part of the spiral staircase shape of DNA. Adenine pairs with Thymine and Guanine pairs with Cytosine.
double helix The double spiral shape of DNA, which looks like a spiral staircase, with the base pairs making up the stairs.
