| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| active transport | the movement of materials up the concentration gradient. |
| sodium-potassium pump | a carrier protein involved in active transport in animal cells. this protein transports Na+ ions and K+ ions up their concentration gradient. |
| endocytosis | the process by which cells ingest external fluis, marcomolecules, and large particles, including other cells. |
| vesicle | a membrane bound organelle that can fuse with lysosomes in some cases, and then their contents are are digested by lysosomal enzymes. |
| pincocytosis | type of endocytosis that involves the transport of solutes or fluids |
| phagocytosis | the movement of large particles or whole cells. |
| phagocytes | the cells in animals that use phagocytosis to ingest bacteria and viruses that enter the body. |
| exocytosis | the process by which a substance is released from the cell through a vesicle that transports the substance to the cell surface and then fuses with the membrane to let the substance out of the cell. (reverse of endocytosis) |
