active transport requires a cell to expend energy
sodium-potassium pump a type of carrier protein- it trasports Na+ ions and K+ ions up their concentration gradients
endocytosis the process by which cells ingest external fluid, macromolecules and large particles including other cells
vesicle the external materials enclosed by a portion of the cells membrane which folds into a pouch. then jumps off the cell and becomes a membrane bound organelles
pinocytosis involves the transport of solutes or fluids
phagocytosis the movement of large particles or whole cells
phagocytes allow lysosomes to fuse with the vesticle that contain the ingested bacteria and viruses
exocytosis the process by which a substance is relased from the cell through a vesicle that transports the substance to the cell surface and ten fuses with the membrane to let the substance out of the cell (the reverse of endocytosis)
