Biology Midterm Vocabulary

cell cycle a cycle of growth and cell division
cytokinesis the splitting of the cytoplasm
interphase the firt three phases of the cell cycle during which there is a period of growht, a period where DNA is copied, and a period where the cell replicates the rest of it's organelles
spindle fiber the fibers that form during cell division to help align the chromosomes and pull the cytoplasm apart
prophase the first phase of mitosis, the nuclear membrane breaks down and chromosomes condense
metaphase second part of mitosis, spindle fiber form, chromosomes begin to move to the equator
anaphase chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell and spindle fibers get shorter
telophase last phase of mitosis, chromatids are pulled apart, move toward opposite poles, cell pinches in the middle, nuclear membranes reform
