Osmosis
Biology Midterm Vocabulary
| Word | Definition |
|---|---|
| passive transport | transport of particles without using energy |
| diffusion | movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
| equilibrium | the state at which two areas have the same concentration gradient and diffusion occurs at a steady rate |
| solute | the particles that dissolve in the solvent |
| solution | the material (usually a liquid) that dissolves the solute |
| osmosis | the movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
| hypertonic | a solution in which there is a lower concentration within the cell; cell shrivels |
| hypotonic | a solution in which there is higher concentration within the cell; cell swells |
| isotonic | a solution in which there is an equal amount of solute in and out of the cell; the cell maintains its shape |
| selectively permeable | the ability to pick out what can pass and what can not |
| facilitated diffusion | diffusion that happens through a channel protein |
| active transport | transport of particles using ATP energy |
| endocytosis | the taking in of particles in active transport |
| exocytosis | the releasing or removal of waste particles |
