| Word | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell | the basic unit of life |
| multicellular | made of multiple cells |
| unicellular | made of a single cell |
| metabolism | the ability to break down and use energy |
| homeostasis | a cell's ability to maintain a stable internal condition |
| reproduction | mating, creation of a new generation, offspring, sex |
| heredity | traits passed down through reproduction |
| cell theory | principle that states that all organisms are made of one or more cells and that all cells come from living material |
| cell membrane | the outer layer of an animal cell made of lipids, controls what enters and leaves the cell |
| cytoplasm | the inner filling part of a cell, holds the organelles in place |
| ribosome | an organelle in which proteins are made, sometimes attached to the ER |
| nucleus | the control center of the cell |
| organelle | the cell's "organs" |
| endoplasmic reticulum | internal membrane compartments which "transport" materials the cell produces and receives |
| vacuole | the storage center of a cell |
| golgi apparatus | a cell organelle in Eukaryotes which packages and sends along materials within the cell |
| nuclear membrane | double membrane surrounding the nucleus, controls what leaves and enters the nucleus |
| mitochondrion | cell organelles which produce ATP energy through oxidative respiration |
| chloroplast | organelle found only in plant cells and produces energy through photosynthesis |
| lysosome | an organelle which uses digestive enzymes to break down waste |
| microtubule | hollow protein fiber involved in cell structure and movement |
| cytoskeleton | protein filaments involved in a cell's shape, structure, and movement |
| centriole | rod shaped organelle, helps in cell division |
