Vocabulary #7

Unit 5: Photosynthesis & Respiration

TermDefinition
energy/ATP Used to perform an action or do work. During cellular respiration, it is released in the cell by breaking down sugar molecules.
photosynthesis the process that takes place in the chloroplast of plant cells in which energy from the sun is converted into glucose (sugar). Sunlight + water + carbon dioxide ----> glucose + oxygen
autotroph an organism that makes its own food. plants are an example.
heterotroph an organism that gets food from other organisms. Animals are an example.
raw materials the chemical ingredients that go in to a reaction. For photosynthesis, they are sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
aerobic/anaerobic requires oxygen / does not require oxygen
semi-permeable some substances can pass through, but others cannot.
cellular respiration process that takes place in mitochondria that breaks down glucose into usable energy (ATP). Glucose + oxygen ---> carbon dioxide + water + ATP (energy)
