Name the 2 types for explorers. ODU 11/12 and 23/17
How would you know if you've detected calculus? You would feel vibrations in the handle as it is moved rough areas.
What sense do you rely on with an explorer? Tactile sense
What kind of pressure is used? Extremely light pressure
How should the grasp be? Modified pen grasp used, feather light grasp, and relaxed.
How is the 11/12 used on anterior teeth? Inserted in the midline and do surfaces toward and surfaces away (flip the instrument)
How is the 11/12 used on posterior teeth? same end for each posterior sextant
What is the 23 best for? Caries detection
17 is best for where in the mouth? Anterior teeth
11/12 is best for what? Calculus detection in entire mouth, deep pockets
How do you precede with the explorer when you encounter calculus in a pocket? Move the tip laterally over the deposit.
What kind of motion should you use with the explorers? A push/pull motion and a walking motion
Where do you insert the 11/12 explorer on posterior teeth? Distal line angle
