Characteristics of Living Things

| delelopment | the natural changes that take place during the life of organisms |
| environment | all things that surround an organism (air, water, soil, rocks, other organisms) or anything inside an organsim |
| adaptation | an inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time |
| homeostasis | regulation of an organism's internal conditions to maintain life "BALANCE" Ex: sweating, shivering |
| reproduction | The production of offspring by organisms;essential for the survival of the species |
| stimulus/response | anything that is part of either environment (inside/outside) and causes some sort of reaction (Ex. have a cold then sneeze, hot then sweat) |
| Scientific Method | The methods that scientists use to gather information and answer questions |
| hypothesis | a possible, testable explanation for the problem |
| experiment | an investigation in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis |
| control group | group used for comparison -does not receive experimental treatment - not always necessary to have in experiment -pay attention to this!! |
| independent variable | the ONE tested factor What am I going to change? |
| Dependent Variable | depends on the independent variable is measured variable/value |
| theory | the explanation of a natural phenomenon that is supported by many observations and experiments over time |
| quantitative data | measured by tool;fact |
| qualitative data | based on five senses;opinion |
