Characteristics of Living Things

delelopment the natural changes that take place during the life of organisms

adaptation an inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time
homeostasis regulation of an organism's internal conditions to maintain life "BALANCE" Ex: sweating, shivering
reproduction The production of offspring by organisms;essential for the survival of the species
stimulus/response anything that is part of either environment (inside/outside) and causes some sort of reaction (Ex. have a cold then sneeze, hot then sweat)
Scientific Method The methods that scientists use to gather information and answer questions
hypothesis a possible, testable explanation for the problem
experiment an investigation in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis
control group group used for comparison -does not receive experimental treatment - not always necessary to have in experiment -pay attention to this!!
independent variable the ONE tested factor What am I going to change?
Dependent Variable depends on the independent variable is measured variable/value
theory the explanation of a natural phenomenon that is supported by many observations and experiments over time
quantitative data measured by tool;fact
qualitative data based on five senses;opinion
