Semester Test Review (Vocabulary)

QuestionAnswer
Classification the grouping of objects or organisms based on a set of criteria.
Taxonomy a discipline of biology primarily concerned with identifying, naming, and classifying species based on natural relationships.
Phylogeny the evolutionary history of species
Binary Fission the division of a cell into two genetically identical cells.
Conjugation two prokaryotes attach to other and exchange genetic information.
Lytic Cycle the host cell makes many copies of viral RNA or DNA.
Lysogenic Cycle the viral DNA inserts, or integrates into a chromosome in a host cell.
Retrovirus Some viruses have RNA instead of DNA for their genetic material.
Protozoan it ingests food.
Alternation of Generation a life cycle of algae that takes two generations to complete a life cycle.
Chitin a strong, flexible polusaccharide that is found in the cell walls of all fungi and in the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans.
Hypha filaments that are the basic structural units that make up the body of multicellular fungus.
Mycelium Hypha grow at their tips and branch repeatedly to form a netlike mass.
Spore a reproductive haploid cell with a hard outer coat that develops into a new organism without the fusion of gametes.
Vascular Tissue specialized transport tissues. A plant adaptation to land environments.
Cotyledons structures that either store food or help absorb food for the tiny sporophyte.
Stomata adaptations that enable the exchange of gases even with the presence of cuticle on a plant.
Tropisms a plant's growth response to an external stimulus.
Guard Cell two cells that form a stoma.
Transpiration helps pell the water column upward; water evaporates from the inside of a leaf to the outside through stomata in this process.
