| chlorophyll | bright green, the most common photosynthetic pigment |
| carbon dioxide | one of the raw materials that helps make glucose |
| fixing | where something is turned from inorganic to organic form |
| carbon fixation | solar energy absorbed by chlorophyll is stored as chemical energy in glucose, then turned into other organic compounds |
| oxygen gas | released as a by-product of photosynthesis |
| autotrophs | organisms that can make their own food |
| heterotrophs | organisms that have to eat something to get energy |
| respiration | where glucose is broken down for energy, it consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide and water |
| ATP (adenosine triphosphate) | special molecule that stores chemical energy until it is needed. |
| Primary production | the net gain in organic matter when autotrophs make more glucose than they can use |
| primary producers | organisms that make an excess of glucose |
| producers | another name for primary producers |
| nutrients | minerals, vitamins, and other substances |
| nitrate | a compound that is the most important form of nitrogen in the sea |
| phosphate | a compound that is the main source of phosphorus in the sea |
