| term | definition |
|---|---|
| plasma membrane | (cell membrane) barrier for the inside and outside of the cell (consistency of plasma) |
| cytoplasm | contains fluids, cytoskeleton, and all organelles except the nucleus |
| cytosol | part of cytoplasm that includes small particles and molecules (ex. ribosomes); about 20% is protein |
| nucleus | core of cell, controls cell's functions, holds DNA |
| prokaryote | organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles; nucleoid; 2 domains: Bacteria and Archaea (A closer to eukaryotic) |
| eukaryote | made up of one or more cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; larger that prokaryotes; ex. white blood cell |
| organelle | subcellular structures that perform specific functions for the cell |
| tissue | group of similar cells that carry out a specific function |
| organ | group of tissues that perform a specific function |
| organ system | group of organs that accomplish |
