Basics of Cells

term definition
plasma membrane (cell membrane) barrier for the inside and outside of the cell (consistency of plasma)
cytoplasm contains fluids, cytoskeleton, and all organelles except the nucleus
cytosol part of cytoplasm that includes small particles and molecules (ex. ribosomes); about 20% is protein
nucleus core of cell, controls cell's functions, holds DNA
prokaryote organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles; nucleoid; 2 domains: Bacteria and Archaea (A closer to eukaryotic)
eukaryote made up of one or more cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; larger that prokaryotes; ex. white blood cell
organelle subcellular structures that perform specific functions for the cell
tissue group of similar cells that carry out a specific function
organ group of tissues that perform a specific function
organ system group of organs that accomplish
