WCHS Biology Chapter 11
| Word | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nitrogenous base | A carbon ring structure that contains one or more atoms of nitrogen |
| Double Helix | Two strands of DNA twisted together |
| DNA replication | The process where DNA in the chomosomes is copied |
| Messenger RNA | Brings instructions from DNA in the nucleus to the cell's cytoplasm |
| Ribosomal RNA | Binds to the mRNA and uses the instructions to assemble the amino acids in the correct order. |
| Transfer RNA | The supplier; delivers amino acids to the ribosome to be assembled into a protein |
| Transcription | A process where in the nucleus, enzymes make an RNA strand |
| Codon | A set of nitrogenous bases that represents an amino acid; order of nitrogenous bases in mRNA determines the type and order of amino acids in proteins |
| Translation | The process of converting the information in a sequence of nitrogenous bases in mRNA into a sequence of amino acids in protein |
| Mutation | Any change in the DNA sequence |
| Point Mutation | A change in a sinlge base pair in DNA |
| Frameshift mutation | A mutation in which a single base is added to or deleted from DNA |
| Chromosomal mutations | Mutation that occurs at the chromosome level resulting in changes in the gene distribution to gametes during meisos, caused when parts of chromosomes break off or rejoin incorretly |
| Mutagen | An agent that can cause a change in DNA |
