Terms for chapter three section one: Modern Biology

QuestionAnswer
organic compounds compounds that are made primarily of carbon atoms.
functional groups clusters of atoms that influence the characteristics of molecules they compose the and the chemical reactions the molecules undergo.
monomers smaller, simpler, molecules.
polymer a molecule that consists of repeated, linked units.
macromolecules large polymers.
condensation reaction when monomers link to form polymers through a chemical reaction.
hydrolysis reaction a reaction in which water is used to break down a polymer.
adenosine triphosphate a certain compound that stores a large amount of energy in it's overall structure. (ATP)
