mechanical digestion the process of breaking food into smaller pieces by physical means such as chewing
peristalsis the wave of muscle contractions that helps move food down the digestive tract
phagocytosis the process by which a cell engulfs matter
salivia fluid in the mouth that is produced by salivary glands and starts the chemical digestion of carbohydrates
villi microscopic, fingerlike projections in the small intestine that increase the surface area for absorption of nutrients
