Chapter 7 Biology..

QuestionAnswer
Cells The basic unit of life
Cell theory a fundamental concept of biology
Cell membrane A thin, flexible barrier in which cells are surrounded by
Nucleus a large membrane-enclosed structure that contains genetic material in the form of DNA & controls many of the cells activities
Eukaryotes cell that enclose their DNA in nuclei
Prokaryotes cells that do not enclose DNA in nuclei
Cytoplasm the fluid portion of the cell outside the nucleus
Organelles specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a eukaryotic cell
vacuoles store materials like water, salts, proteins, & carbohydrates
Lysosomes small organelles filled with enzymes
cytoskeleton network of protein filaments
Centrioles located near the nucleus & help organize cell division
Ribosomes small particles of RNA & protein found throughout the cytoplasm & all cells
endoplasmic reticulum internal membrane system in with Eukaryotic cells contain
Golgi apparatus appears as a stack of flattened membranes
Chloroplasts biological equivalents of solar power plants
Mitochondria power plants of the cell
cell wall many cells produce a strong supporting layer around the membrane
lipid bilayer gives cell membrane a flexible structure that forms a strong barrier between the cell & its surroundings
selectively permeable substances can pass across them & others cannot
diffusion driving force behind the movement of many subtances across the cell membrane
facilitated diffusion molecules can not directly diffuse across a membrane pass thru special protein channels
isotonic means, "same strength"
hypertonic means, "above strength"
hyptonic means, "below strength"
osmotic pressure the net movement of water out of or into a cell produces a force
homeostasis relatively constant internal physical & chemical conditions
tissues a group of similar cells that performs a particular function
organ group of tissues that work together to perform closely relative functions
organ system a group of organs that work together to perform a specific function
receptor in which the signaling molecule can bind

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
