Chapter 18 Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Genetic Map | abstract maps that place the relative location of genes on chromosomes based on recombination frequency |
| Physical Map | use landmarks within DNA sequences, ranging from restriction sites to the ultimate level of detail; the actual DNA sequence |
| Opening Reading Frame | A region of DNA that encodes a sequence of amino acids with no stop codons in the reading frame |
| Bioinformatics | computer programs to search for genes, to compare genomes, and to assemble genomes are only a few of the new genomic approaches |
| Pseudogenes | A copy of a gene that is not transcribed |
| Simple Sequence Repeats | A 1:3 nucleotide sequence such as CA or CCG that is repeated thousands of times. |
| Transposons | DNA sequence capable of transposition |
| Functional Genomics | The study of the function of genes and their products, beyond simply ascertaining gene sequence |
| Proteomics | The study of the proteomes of organisms. This is related to functional genomics as the proteome is responsible for much of the function encoded by the genome |
| Transcriptome | All the RNA present in a cell or tissue at a given time. |
