Lecture 6
Eukaryotic Extracellular Structures
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Extracellular Matrix | Meshwork surrounding animal cells. Glycoproteins, polysaccharides and proteoglycans |
| Desmosomes | Intercellular junction. Functions as rivet, fastening cells together |
| Gap Junctions | Intercellular junction. Protein surrounds a pore and allows passage of materials |
| Tight Junctions | Intercellular junctions. Prevents leakage of materials through space between cells |
| Plasmodesmata | Open channel in cell wall that connects cytoplasm of adjacent cells. Allows water and small solutes to pass |
| Plant Cell Wall | Protective layer. Contains polysaccharides such as cellulose |
| Cellulose | Structural polysaccharide of plant cell wall. Consists of glucose mono more, joined by beta glycosidic linkages |
| Integrins | Transmembrane receptor protein with two subunits that interconnects the ECM and cytoskeleton |
| Fibronectin | Glycoprotein secreted by animal cells, helps them to attach to the ECM |
| Collagen | Glycoprotein that forms strong fivers. Found in connective tissue and bone |
| Glycoproteins | Protein with one or more covalently attached carbohydrates |
