Heredity and Reproduction
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Describe the relationship between reproduction and heredity. | Reproduction is the act of producing offspring, nothing more. Heredity is the transfer of genetic characteristics to those offspring. |
| Describe the relationship between DNA and chromosomes. | DNA is made up of four bases- adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. When these four bases are arranged in a segment, it is called a gene. When these segments of DNA or genes are compactly coiled, it is called a chromosome. |
| Describe the relationship between genetic information and gene. | A gene is the basic unit of genetic information. |
| Describe the relationship between diploid and haploid. | The difference is related to the number of chromosomes that the cell contains. Diploid cells contain two complete sets (2n) of chromosomes (mitosis). Haploid cells contain only one complete set of chromosomes (meiosis). |
