Terms for chapter two section two: Modern Biology

| chemical reaction | when one or more substances change to produce one or more chemical substances. |

| activation energy | the amount of needed to start the reaction. |
| catalysts | certain chemical substances that reduce the amount of activation energy that is needed for a reaction to take place. |
| enzyme | a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed. |
| redox reactions | reactions in which electrons are transferred between atoms. |
| oxidation reactions | reactions in which a reactant loses one or more electrons, thus becoming positive in charge. |
| reduction reaction | a reaction in which a reactant gains one or more electrons thus becoming negative in charge. |
