Genetics Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Gametes Sex Cells. Haploid cells that contain 1 of each chromosome type. Ex. Sperm & Egg
Zygote A fertilized egg , contains genes from both parents.
Genetics The study of how traits are passed to offspring.
Recessive Shown with lowercase letters. Ex. Curly Fur= f.
Dominant Shown with capital letters. Ex. Tall Height = T
Homozygous The two alleles for a trait are the same. Ex. HH or hh.
Heterozygous The two alleles for a trait are different. Ex. Gg. the dog is Bb.
Phenotype What does the organism look like? An organism's physical appearance. Ex. Blue Eyes
Genotype What are the organism's letters? An organism's genetic makeup.
Sperm Contains genes from the father.
Egg Contains genes from the mother.
