Three stages of cell signaling Reception, Transduction, Response
Reception A cell hears a signal from a neighboring cell and detects the signal when a molecule binds to a receptor protein found on the surface or inside of the cell
Transduction Protein changes to initiate this process
Signal transduction Interprets and carries the signal to the appropriate end point and can amplify the signal
Response Specific to the signal the initiated it and the type of cell that received it; triggers rearrangement of the cytoskeleton, tells the cell to die, etc.
Quorum unit of measure that defines the minimum number of members of a population that must be present in order for a specific process to occur
Quorum sensing A type of cell density response that can regulate the expression of light production genes in response to their cell density within their local environment
Luciferase Enzyme that catalyzes a reaction that results in the production of light within the cell
Bioluminescence Production of light within the cell
Aseptic technique Performed both prior to and during experimental investigations that deal with bacteria
Procedures needed to be followed Sterilized instruments, sterilized growth medium, gloves, hood, minimal air exposure
Autoclave Large oven that subjects its contents to high pressure steam at 121 C and pressures at 15 PSI higher than standard
