Cell Growth_Divison

Chapter 10; Prentice Hall Biology review sheet.

QuestionAnswer
If a cell has 16 chromosomes, how many chromosomes will each new daughter cell have? (This is for MITOSIS- NOT MEIOSIS.) Sixteen.
When a cell grows larger, what happens to its volume and surface area? The volume and surface area gets larger, but the ratio is smaller.
What are two MAIN problems a cell would have it if grew too large? DNA overload and difficulty exchanging materials.
The rate at which materials enter and leave the cell depends on the cells _______ and the rate at which they are used up depends on the cells ______. Surface area and volume.
Cell division provides each daughter cell with a copy of what? DNA; One complete set of genetic information (either answer is fine.)
What are the two main stages of cell division? Mitosis and cytokineses.
Cells are visible during which stage of the cell cycle? Cell division
What happens to a cell during Interphase? (Brief answer is fine.) The cell goes through a "between divison" phase. DNA is spread out as cell prepares to divide, and DNA is copied.
List the FOUR stages of mitosis. Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.
What occurs in Prophase? Chromatin condenses into chromosomes, centrioles separate and spindles form. Nuclear envelope breaks down.
What occurs in Metaphase? Chromosomes line up across center of cell, connected to spindle fiber at centromere.
What occurs in Anaphase? Sister chromatids separate into individual chromosomes, moved apart.
What occurs in Telophase? Chromosomes gather at opposite end and lose shape, two new nuclear envelopes form.
List the THREE phases of Interphase, and briefly describe what happens in each. G1 Phase- Cell does most of growing, synthesizes protein and organelles. S Phase- Chromosome replication; synthesis. G2 Phase- Organelles and molecules for cell division are produced.
What is the cell cycle? (Only list, do not describe.) Four phases: G1, S, G2, and M Phase.
What is the role of a spindle fiber during mitosis? To help separate chromosomes.
What is the desired outcome of cell division? To duplicate the parent cell into two new daughter cells.
What is a cell plate? When does it occur? A cell plate is the dividing nuclei, it is only in plant cells and it occurs directly after Telophase, during cytokineses.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
