| Decomposers | Special group of organisms that are capable of breaking down dead or dying tissues of other species |
| Tertiary Consumers | They re level 4 consumers,a carnivore at the topmost level in a food chain that feeds on other carnivores. Ex: coyotes |
| Secondary Consumers | They are level 3 consumers, are animals that eat primary consumers. These are usually carnivores. |
| Primary Consumers | An animal that eats grass and other green plants in a food chain; an herbivore. |
| Producers | Level 1 producers that make their own nutrients. Ex: brine flies and shrimp |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| potential energy | energy that is stored due to an objects position of arrangement |
| thermal energy | kinetic energy that produce heat |
| calorie | amount of energy required to raise the tempreture of 1 gram of water by 1 degree |
| ATP | When a phosphate group is pulled away during a chemical reaction, energy is released. |
| chemical work | building large molecules(proteins) |
| mechanical work | contraction of a muscle |
| transport work | pumping solutes(ions) across a cellular membrane |
| Heterotroph | an organism that cannot fix carbon and uses organic carbon for growth ex: carnivores, herbivores |
| autotroph | A producer, it uses energy to make protein, fats, carbohydrates |
| chloroplast | The cellular organelle where photosynthesis takes place |
| chlorophyll | chemical compounds found in Chloroplasts that gives the organelles a green color |
| stroma | a thick liquid in the inner membrane |
| thylakoids | in the stroma, they are disk-shaped sacs |
| Light reactions | convert the energy in sunlight to chemical energy |
| Calvin cycle | makes sugar from the atoms in carbon dioxide plus the hydrogen ions and high-energy electrons carried by NADPH |
