Photosynthesis

Definitions and information related to the process of photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
What is an AUTOTROPH? Organisms that use energy from sunlight or inorganic substances to make organic compounds. (make own food)
What is a HETEROTROPH? Organisms that must get energy from food instead of directly from sunlight or inorganic substances. (need outside food for energy)
What is PHOTOSYNTHESIS? The process plants use to trap the sun’s energy and build carbohydrates
What is the EQUATION for photosynthesis? 6CO2 + 6H2O + Sunlight -------> C6H12O6+ 6O2 + ATP
What are the LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTIONS? The 2 phases of photosynthesis where light energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of ATP.
What are THYLAKOIDS? Internal disk-shaped structure of a chloroplast that contains the pigment chlorophyll
What is CHLOROPHYLL? The green pigment responsible for trapping light energy in photosynthesis
What is the ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN? Series of molecules through which electrons are passed to make ATP (energy).
What is NADP+? Electron carrier molecule; when carrying excited electrons it becomes NADPH
What is the LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTION? (DARK REACTION) Phase of photosynthesis where energy from light-dependent reactions is used to produce glucose and additional ATP molecules.
What is the CALVIN CYCLE? Series of reactions that use carbon dioxide to form carbohydrates (glucose)
What is the FIRST PHASE of Photosynthesis? Light is absorbed by chlorophyll.
What is SECOND PHASE of Photosynthesis? Light energy is converted to chemical energy by passing through the electron transport chain.
What is the THIRD PHASE of Photosynthesis? Inorganic CO2 is converted into glucose (and other carbohydrates) during the Calvin Cycle.
What happens to WATER during the second phase of photosynthesis? The water molecule is split. Hydrogen is used in the Electron Transport Chain and Oxygen is released.
What happens to the CARBON DIOXIDE that is absorbed? The CO2 is split and the carbon is used to create glucose and more oxygen is released.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
