Premature Born too early
Labour The beginning of the contractions of the uterine wall
Afterbirth Another name for the placenta when it's pushed out of the vagina after the baby is born
Passive Immunity The antibodies that the baby receive from mother's blood and milk
Follicle An egg surrounded by a small group of cells in the ovary
Ovulation When the follicle bursts and the egg is released
Menopause This is when a woman's menstrual cycle stops between the ages of 45 and 55
Oestrogen A hormone secreted by the ovary that stimulates secondary sexual characteristics in females and helps to control the menstrual cycle.
Puberty The stage when people develop secondary sexual characteristics
Pituitary gland A gland at the base of the brain that secretes hormones to control the activity of other organs
Adolescent The stage of life between being a child and an adult
Artificial insemination When semen is collected from the man and artificially placed in the woman's uterus.
IUD Intra uterine device: a coil shaped device that fits in the uterus and prevents sperm passing and embryo implanting
Condom A thin rubber tube that fits over the penis
The pill An oral contraceptive for women that contains progesterone and oestrogen to prevent ovulation
Vasectomy The cutting of the vas deferens in the man to prevent sperm from entering the semen
HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus - a human pathogen that destroys the immune system
AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome - when someone who is HIV positive starts to display symptoms such as flu or high temperature
Gonorrhoea A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria which can cause sterility in men and women
Lymphocytes A type of white blood cell which coordinates the immune system
